On Painting Hermine

At Grimes Cove the last storm surges
of Hermine roll in, surf rolling
into waves of white with cobalt
green while I watch, study, cajoling 

thoughts of how to paint this foggy
color full gray day. I feel like
an invisible observer,
unseen while I'm out on a hike,

pausing, contemplating each splash,
the white spray crescendo, each surge.
My black pen dashes to and fro,
marking where sharp ledges converge, 

rocks loosely defined, then it's calm;
clear water brushes on paper
with colors dabbling in, wet
flowing moods, flat brush reshaper 

of stone before Gouache splashes
on firm rocks, overpowering
colors below, with splattering
bubbles, opaque white towering 

high above rocks, brush strokes stranded,
while below cobalt green brushes
by in surf's subtle final mix,
paused, sensory in rushes.
