Group of Three Female Nudes
Carl Newman (1858-1932), American
Drawing
Carl Newman taught figure drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Newman's large, flamboyant images of nude figures often shocked the American public; one of his paintings was removed from an exhibition because too many people complained. When his paintings didn't bring in any money during the Depression his widow resented it, destroying much of his later work. -SAAM curatorial file (Smithsonian American Art Museum)
