At the opening I was thrilled when my modest painting friend Richard
was awarded the Best in Show honor. We paint in our weekly drawing group, and this will be our third year painting at Stonington, Maine in September.

Best in Show
Young Woman
Richard Parker Winslow
Watercolor on rice paper

I'd seen this painting at Richard's home earlier in the week and was impressed. Richard said that he painted it last winter in Florida. The rice paper was treated as a batik, and then painted with watercolors.

The judge was Loretta Turner, sales consultant at Maine Art Hill gallery in Kennebunk. Her statement said:
"This water color is wonderfully complicated, yet, so simple. It transcends centuries, back to the 'you know who,' yet could be any young woman today. The treatment of patches of segmented colors amid active surrounding thin lines allows us - the viewers - to realize how complicated life is for her. The warm palette across and around her face becomes her enigma. Though we do not know her, we want to assure her that it will be all right."
